I am currently doing a competition for MISE - Mayor's Intiative for Social Enterprise, representing SMU-ISE.
It's a very small competition, nothing international but i am still exhilarated and excited!
It's very tough for me because it's something new and i have never ever done it before!
I am getting excited because I am really learning a lot from it! I am looking at doing the Marketing/Sales part of it and pitching sales to companies. I am not doing it on a personal level (nono, i am not going to do door-to-door sales but to sell it to companies and make it possible)
Our Social Enterprise is going to be up and it's going to be a social enterprise under Singapore Association of Mental Health (SAMH). It's known as The Mail Factory which provide letter shopping services such as inserting, perforating, labelling, tabbing etc.
I talked to Ken Koh, a SMU student who has went ahead to set up his own company, Youth Enterprise Academy (YEA). He suggested that i worked with DP group which sells databases to companies. Since these companies would require people to send out letters/catalogs to databases which they have collected.
COOLEST. EXCITING. I know i might be over-reacting but it's a damn smart idea. working backwards. packaging, we just need to convince DP group to send us some of their contacts or recommend. However, a recommendation is hard to get from DP group (
www.dpgroup.com.sg) which is a big company. It would be a risk on their part. WHy would a big company want to help such a small start-up company?
Definitely in the short run, it would be difficult to get them to work with us. We have nothing. We have no credibility in the industry yet, we have no deals to show them that we are sustainable and a stable company. How to show them that we will work?
so let's start with SMEs, start-ups, slowly build it up from there. We build it up from there, we will gain alot more credibility. Once we stabilize, we will hit DP group but DP group is only good if we want to grow as a SE. If it is for sustainability, we will leech onto a personal contact or try to pitch to organizations that are more likely to respond to us because we are a SE (selling on our social cause first). We willl leech on a big one, and then work with SMEs. This will stabilize our company and bring in a stable income, but it won't make us grow.
to make a company grow, you must take a wider step. this step is the determining step which will help your company to really grow. i don't mean by the usual sales but increase the operations by folds. the hard part is selling to Dp group.
i need to learn sales! EXCITING! maybe we can do it in such a way that we can give commission to DP group for recommendations that are successful.. they are such a big company, they are not looking at gaining profits from us. boils down to the social element. Need to think it in depth. in details.

One of the greatest thing i learnt this summer is that people are in different things for different reasons and we ought to accept it.
